Healing from the Inside Out: The Poop Queen’s Journey

Liz Roman Poop Queen

Our Sleeved Life Podcast recently had the privilege of sitting down with Liz, also known as The Poop Queen, to discuss her personal health journey and how she found her calling in functional medicine. From her early struggles with digestion to becoming an advocate for gut health, Liz shares her experiences openly and honestly.

Early Struggles: Constipation and Hashimoto’s

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
So, can you tell us a little bit about how all of this started for you?

Liz (The Poop Queen):
Yeah, so it all kind of started when I was in my 20s. I had severe constipation. Like, it wasn’t just the occasional “oh, I’m a little backed up,” it was chronic. And I didn’t know that was abnormal. I just thought, you know, everybody deals with this. And I started developing these weird symptoms—fatigue, brain fog, hair loss. I was tired all the time. I went to conventional doctors, and they kept saying, “Take a laxative,” or, “Here’s some fiber.” But no one ever looked at the root cause.

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
That’s wild. So it was really just dismissed.

Liz:
Yeah, I felt so dismissed. And then, eventually, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. That’s when things started clicking, like, “Oh, this explains why I’ve been feeling this way my whole life.” But honestly, even with the Hashimoto’s diagnosis, I still struggled because the standard approach didn’t really give me answers. It was just, “Take your medication and you’ll be fine.” But I wasn’t fine.

Discovering Functional Medicine

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
So how did you find your way to functional medicine?

Liz:
It was kind of accidental. I stumbled upon some articles online about gut health and autoimmune disease. It resonated with me. I started researching more and found a practitioner who actually wanted to dig into why my body was acting this way, not just treat the symptoms. That’s when I realized, oh, this is the path I want to go down. And then I started diving deep—labs, elimination diets, supplements, lifestyle changes. It was a lot of trial and error, but I finally started feeling better.

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
And you weren’t just improving, you were healing from the inside out.

Liz:
Exactly. The focus shifted from quick fixes to understanding what my body actually needed. My digestion improved, my energy came back, my hair started growing again, and the brain fog lifted. It was life-changing.

Becoming The Poop Queen

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
When did you realize you could help other people?

Liz:
Once I started seeing real results in myself, I realized I wanted to share what I had learned. Everyone around me was struggling, and I knew that if I could help even a few people, it would be worth it. I started blogging, then social media, and eventually built a platform to teach people about gut health in a way that was relatable and practical. That’s how The Poop Queen was born.

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
That’s amazing. It’s such a unique brand, too.

Liz:
Yeah, I wanted something that would make people laugh but also feel empowered. Talking about poop isn’t glamorous, but it’s important, and it’s real. People need to normalize these conversations to improve their health.

The Daily Struggles

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
Even now, do you still deal with struggles?

Liz:
Absolutely. Healing isn’t linear. Some days, I feel amazing, and other days I feel like I’m back at square one. Stress, travel, sleep—everything affects digestion. But I’ve learned strategies to manage it and stay on track. It’s about consistency, not perfection.

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
So even when life gets hectic, you’re able to pivot.

Liz:
Exactly. It’s about listening to my body and giving it what it needs. Sometimes that’s more fiber, sometimes it’s more rest, sometimes it’s meditation. I’ve learned that wellness isn’t just physical—it’s mental, emotional, and spiritual, too.

Lessons Learned

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned on this journey?

Liz:
That the body is incredibly resilient. You can change your health, but you have to be patient and intentional. Also, don’t settle for answers that don’t feel right. Listen to your body. If something isn’t working, keep looking for solutions. Don’t ignore the signs—it’s your body speaking to you.

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
And your journey is living proof.

Liz:
Yes, it’s proof that it’s possible to heal from the inside out. I want people to know that change is possible, even if it feels impossible at the start.

Advice for Others

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
What advice would you give someone struggling with gut issues or autoimmune problems?

Liz:
Start with awareness. Track your symptoms, your diet, your lifestyle. Then look for practitioners who are willing to dig deeper, not just treat symptoms. Be patient with yourself. Healing is a process, and it takes time. And remember, laughter and joy are just as important as supplements and diet.

Our Sleeved Life Podcast:
So true. It’s about the full picture.

Liz:
Exactly. You can’t just focus on one aspect and ignore the others. True health comes from balance—mind, body, and spirit.
